  1. I ordered the Blue Moon Burger and fries.

    a. The Patty - 4.9 Perfectly imperfect in shape. The size was just right and the seasoning was pretty spot on.

    b. The Toppings - 4.75 - The blue moon burger comes with a blue cheese/garlic mix and raw onions. At other locations, blue cheese burgers swim in the blue cheese, not here. I thought the qty was just right, enough to be decadent bt not too much to make me feel like a slob.

    c. The Atmosphere - 3.5 Comfortable.

    d. The Sides - 3.5 I coveted Jody's onion rings the whole time.

  2. The Blue Moon has been my hangover craving for years! Last night I had the Mushroom Swiss burger and onion rings with a side of ranch.

    a. The Patty - 4.5 It was big, perfectly medium rare and very juicy! We don't have a separate category for the bun, but mine could have been a little more substantial.

    b. The Toppings - 4 Mine came with the mushroom and swiss, plus I added raw onion. It was a messy mix and there was a near disaster when the cheese slid one direction and the onion another. There was also dill pickle slices in my basket which I just ate on their own.

    c. The Atmosphere - 3.5 The server was prompt and did bring us lots of extra napkins (which I dearly needed) but the napkins were pretty flimsy. Also a slight point deduction for the lack of hot doctors during our visit :-)

    d. The Sides - 4 My onion rings were plentiful with a batter based coating. They did get a little greasy towards the bottom of the basket, but that didn't stop us. I also sampled the regular and waffle fries, I'd probably opt for the waffle variety if you're in a fry mood.

Overall the Blue Moon is consistent and yummy!

  3. I order the Best Cheeseburger.

The Patty. (5.0) Honest to god, Nicci stole my line: 'imperfectly perfect'. It's what popped into my head last night as I continued to marvel over the Blue Moon's unexpectedly competitive burgers. (Kitchen tip: I'll never again form perfectly rounded patties.) I ordered mine 'medium', and that's how it was served. Medium rare might have made it too juice, I suspect.

The toppings. (3.0) Routine: tomato, lettuce, slice raw onion. I coveted Nicci and Brad's Blue Moon Burgers, which is what I'll order on my next visit. And there will be a next visit soon, probably the next time Andy's in town.

The atmosphere. (4.0) I felt really comfortable here. The decor is slightly retro, though it might be that it's just old. Not sure, as it was my first visit. The service was extremely attentive, although it wasn't very busy on the mezzanine level, a cool interior design feature. And the kids quietly playing pool was a nice touch. Fortunately, we heard no pierce screams from the vicinity of the pinball machine.

The sides. (4.5) I have a weakness for waffle fries, and Blue Moon did not disappoint. And they serve them with a side of ranch.

The Blue Moon Best Cheeseburger lived up to its billing and receives Retiring Guy's highest recommendation.

  4. Make that "piercing" screams under 'the atmosphere'. The first time I proofread my comment, I zapped it into oblivion, and I wasn't about to redo it a second time.

  5. I arrived late, much to my embarrassment. However, the waitress was on top of things, taking my order and having it out only slightly behind everyone else.

Due to the speed that it came out, the burger was slightly rarer than I prefer. However, this was completely on me, as I explicitly told them to balance medium rare with getting it out ASAP. With that, they nailed it almost perfectly.

The quality of the burger . . . amazing. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that I will be going back. Good hangover food, absolutely! But then again, this burger is so good that it is also good for many occasions.

I rate the patty a solid 4.5 - and that is with it undercooked. It was NOT preformed, i.e. this was created on the spot. Seasoning was minimal if even present. It tasted like beef. Top quality beef. Wonderful, juicy beef . . .

The bun? 4.5 It did everything a bun should do. It was not over-sized to the patty, it sucked up the juices without falling apart. My only regret is that it wasn't . . . fancier. I like buns with onion cooked into it or some such thing. Personal preference.

Toppings. My Blue Moon burgers onions were crisp, strong and plentiful. Fantastic. And the sauce? I think a touch more would have been ideal, but the strong flavor combined with the fresh onions and slammed against the grilled flavor of the patty. Toppings get a 4.5

Atmosphere? 3.5 I was uncomfortable in the chairs. Granted, I am 6'2", 250 #s so I am uncomfortable in most chairs. Everything else about the place was great. Maybe next time I should just show up on time and make sure we get a booth.

Sides? I stole some from the HUGE baskets everyone ordered. Fries - rocked. Onion rings - rocked. Waffle fries - rocked. Sides get a full 4.5. If they had something equally as good but a bit more exotic, it would have easily been a 5.0.

Overall, this is a high-quality burger and goes into my list of favorite Madison establishments. Is it my favorite burger? That is tough . . . which of my children do I love more?

I guess that if you asked me if I would like to go to the Olde Fashioned for the #30 or to the Blue Moon, my answer would be . . .

    YES!
